Try The Hyve’s cBioPortal Demo - Explore the Possibilities of Customization

A New Way to Experience cBioPortal

We have been working with cBioPortal for many years, and we firmly believe that the real power of cBioPortal for cancer genomics lies in running your own private instance — a secure cBioPortal environment that has been customized to your needs so that you can compare your your proprietary data to the rich public datasets. Custom cBioPortal instances are a great way to perform collaborative data analysis of proprietary and public data within an institute or consortium. At The Hyve, we have spent nearly a decade scaling cBioPortal deployments within life sciences and pharma, making it easy for multiple users to collaborate on a single platform. Now, with our new demo instance, you can experience firsthand what a private deployment might look like for your organization. Check it out here.

Showcased Features: What Can You Explore in The Demo?

This demo server is designed to give you a hands-on preview of what a private cBioPortal instance could look like when tailored to your organization’s needs. It combines the core functionality available on the public portal with additional configurations and custom features that can be enabled in private deployments. Whether you are part of a research institute, hospital, or pharma company, this demo offers a glimpse into the flexible, collaborative environment that cBioPortal can provide when deployed locally.

1.  Custom-Enabled Features (Available Only in The Hyve's Demo Portal)

These features are either not enabled on the public portal or require additional configuration:

  • Custom URL and Login Page

The demo is hosted at a custom URL and features a branded login page, which can be connected to institutional authentication systems like LDAP or SSO.

  • Orientation-Aware Structural Variant Table

Viewable in the Prostate Cancer TCGA study, this feature is enabled via backend configuration to display detailed structural variant information. Read more about this here

  • LLM-assisted OQL query writing with OQL Gene Assistant

Advanced querying of cBioPortal data can be done using OQL, cBioPortal’s Onco Query Language. To assist non-technical users, and to make life easier for power users, we have developed a tool that writes OQL queries based on natural language input - you tell the Assistant what you need and it will write an OQL query for you. Read about how this project got started here
The OQL Gene Assistant is in beta and has now been updated to provide more accurate queries - check it out by selecting a study and going to ‘Query by Gene’ in our demo server.

2.  Core Features from the Public cBioPortal (Also Available in the Demo)

These widely used analytical features were developed or co-developed by The Hyve and are now part of the core cBioPortal platform, available in both the public and demo portals:

  • Mutational Signatures

Mutational signatures represent characteristic patterns of mutations caused by different mutational processes. Analyze mutational signatures at the patient level and integrate them into your study view: Navigate to Charts → Mutational Signature to add signature data.

  • Survival Analysis Enhancements

Compare survival across drug types using the Survival tab, now equipped with:

    • Number-at-risk tables
    • Hazard ratio calculations
    • Landmarks for Survival Comparison

Read more about it here.

  • Genomic Evolution Tracking

Visualize variant allele frequency changes across multiple sample groups with the Group by function. Check out our article on this feature.

  • Custom Variant Annotation Filter

Filter samples in the Study View using your own custom variant annotations. Read more about this feature in this article, or check out this feature on our demo server.

What's Next?

We are gradually rolling out more custom features developed by The Hyve, making them available for testing on this platform. If you want to see how cBioPortal can be tailored to your needs, this is the perfect way to explore the possibilities.
Whether you’re a clinical researcher, pathologist, or biotech professional, we invite you to try the demo and experience how cBioPortal can be customized to enhance your research workflows.
