Marc Borkhuis

Bioinformatics Intern specialized in cBioPortal

Marc holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences from Utrecht University, where he completed a minor in Artificial Intelligence and a thesis on the application of AI in vaccine development. He is currently pursuing his Master’s degree in Bioinformatics and Biocomplexity at the same institution.

During his Master’s program, Marc conducted research at the AI Technology for Life (AIT4Life) group, focusing on "opening the black box" of Deep Learning models in genomics. He developed an iterative, explainable AI (XAI) framework utilizing a "Student-Expert" comparative method to identify "Explanatory Gaps" in model predictions. This approach moves beyond traditional predictive modeling toward the active, iterative discovery of new biological logic.

Currently, Marc is an intern at The Hyve, where he focuses on accelerating and optimizing the Gentropy pipeline by implementing quantum algorithms. Outside of his academic and professional pursuits, he enjoys reading, spending time in nature, and flying his drone.
