Femke obtained a bachelor's degree in Animal Sciences at Wageningen University. Although she enjoyed learning about genetics, feed science, and cell biology, she felt she was missing something in this program. Femke became passionate about programming during her studies and decided to proceed with a Bioinformatics master's (Wageningen University) to combine her interest in both fields. Her thesis focussed on taxonomy-aware genome mining for antibiotics. For her internship, she developed a functional metagenomics pipeline.
In her free time, Femke likes to play board games, train her horse, go for a run or a ride on her race bike, or read a book.
